Naver Map vs KakaoMap vs Google Maps in Korea: What Works in 2026

Why Google Maps falls short in Korea

For years Korea did not allow Google to take its 1:5,000 map data out of the country. On 27 February 2026 the government conditionally approved the export.

That approval did not switch on new features by itself.

Latest status: in August 2026 Google told The Korea Herald it plans to bring "full-functioning" Google Maps to Korea, including navigation, but gave no launch date. A launch could change this guide, so check again near your trip.

Naver Map: first steps

1. Install NAVER Map before you leave. The listing is available on the US App Store. If you use Android, check that it appears in your Play Store.
2. Change the language in the app settings. Menu names can differ by phone and app version.
3. Choose English, Japanese or Simplified Chinese.
4. Allow location access and make sure you have mobile data. See our eSIM guide if you still need a plan.

Naver says it has offered English, Chinese and Japanese versions since 2018, and it added multilingual support for reviews and filters in 2024. Not every label is translated, so expect some Korean.

Exit, platform and car numbers are numerals, so you can read them in any language.

Printed Naver Map guides are also available at the Incheon Airport tourist information center, the Airport Railroad information desk and the Myeongdong Welcome Center, according to Naver's 2024 announcement.

Transit directions in Naver Map

1. Tap the route icon and enter your start and destination.
2. Choose public transit. The app lists several routes.
3. Read the route for your line, direction, transfer and exit number.

Naver describes real-time arrival times, subway maps, boarding and exit guidance, and alternative transport options.

Do you need a Korean number?

Naver says any foreigner with an overseas-issued passport can use passport verification, using only a smartphone. It did not list the languages supported, and it plans to expand both services and languages.

KakaoMap: when to use it

• Use it as a second opinion when Naver can't find a place.
• Kakao highlights subway and bus locations on the map and rankings of popular nearby places.
• The listing covers driving, transit, walking and cycling routes.

Japanese readers: KakaoMap's listing shows no Japanese. Use Naver Map as your main app.

Finding concert venues

Search by the Korean name if the English name fails. If you only have a Korean address, paste it in.

On show day:

• Copy the venue's Korean name from the official notice or ticket page, and paste it into the app.
• Check the gate or hall in your event notice. Large sites have several buildings, and a map pin may not match your entrance.
• Look up your route home before the show and check the last train for your line. Screenshot it in case your battery runs low.

FAQ

Does Google Maps work in Korea in 2026?

Partly. You can search places, read reviews and get public transit routes.

Turn-by-turn walking and driving directions are not available as of late October 2026, and Google has given no launch date.

Can I use Naver Map in English or Japanese?

Yes. The app offers English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Korean maps.

Some text may remain in Korean.

Can I use Naver Map without a Korean phone number?

Yes for searching and directions. For bookings, orders and payments, Naver's passport verification works without a Korean number.

Which is better, Naver Map or KakaoMap?

Start with Naver Map, especially if you want Japanese. Keep KakaoMap as a backup when a place doesn't show up.
